If you are tired of paying expensive grocery store prices for poor fruit quality consider growing fruit trees. There is nothing quite like picking your own ripened cherries or apples right off the tree. Apple trees and cherry trees not only supply delicious fresh fruit, but provide shade as well as being beautiful landscape trees. It is not difficult to grow your own trees, but they do require maintenance and care compared to other tree varieties. Consider these tips for growing fruit-bearing trees.

Choosing Trees

Regardless of the type of fruit trees you choose, they must be compatible with the type of climate in your area. Ask the sales people at the nursery what varieties they recommend and which ones produce the most fruit. It is also a good idea to look for varieties that are disease-resistant, which can make a big difference to producing healthy harvests.

In order to bear fruit, some trees will require two trees in the yard to provide cross-pollination. Many of the newer varieties of fruit-bearing trees are self-pollinating, and you only need one tree to bear fruit. Read the labels to determine if the tree will be full-sized, dwarf or semi-dwarf. The size will help to determine the appropriate space needed for growing trees to maturity in the yard.

Consider purchasing a couple of different fruit tree varieties, so you always have delicious fresh fruits for several months out of the year. A cherry tree is done producing by July, peaches are mature in September and apple trees are ready for harvesting in October and November.

Care

After planting, cover the area around the tree base with bark mulch. This helps to retain some moisture and discourages weeds from growing. To keep a portion of the harvest, you need to protect some types of fruit trees from birds and wildlife. Ripe or fermenting fruit is a big draw for some varieties of birds. In some cases such as cherry trees it may be necessary to cover trees with bird netting when fruits have begun to ripen.

If insects become a problem it may be necessary to spray with insecticides. Young trees usually need protection around the base of the trunks from dogs and wildlife such as rabbits. Chicken wire around the trunk is usually sufficient protection.

Fertilize fruit trees with a ratio of 1-2-1 in the winter or fall before they begin going dormant. Lower amounts of nitrogen in a slow release fertilizer prevent the tree from putting out excessive foliage and less fruits. If it is available, try to get chicken, cow or horse manure, which are natural slow release fertilizers containing nitrogen.

Maintenance also includes pruning to shape trees and remove damaged branches. Trim out branches to produce a fork shape and leave a minimum of five inches between horizontal branches for bearing fruit. Pruning encourages new growth as well as improving fruit harvests.

Fruit trees take a while to get established before producing edible fruits. In most cases it can be a couple of years before they begin to bear. Pick off fruit blossoms that may appear during the second year to allow trees to establish and strength root growth before bearing fruits.

Have you always loved the look and feel of a Greenhouse and wished you could have one of your own? If you thought having your own greenhouse was too complicated or costly, you would be wrong. There are now online retailers that cater from everyone to a part-time hobbyist to a serious horticulturalist, and everyone in between. Every one of these folks is going to have different needs that have to be met at different levels, and thankfully there are some great places to go that can accommodate all of these varying people and their greenhouse needs.

If you are a homeowner looking to start up your own greenhouse, you will need to consider a few things before you decide on what kind of greenhouse to build and how much effort you will be putting into it. First, how much space do you have? There are some awesome Greenhouse Kits available out there for beginners and you can get the right size that works perfectly for the amount of space you have to use.

Another aspect for you to consider when deciding how to build a greenhouse is the cost of the structure and what you will be planting in it. What is your general budget for this project? How flexible is your budget and where to you want to make the greatest investments? Buying Greenhouse Supplies can seem kind of overwhelming at first, but once you know where to go and have a general idea of what you need, it becomes much simpler. And even if you still struggle with knowing exactly what kinds of supplies you need to buy the people who sell greenhouse kits and supplies are experts and know what you need and can help you out whenever you feel a little lost.

Finally, you need to know how much maintenance you can put into your greenhouse. How you choose to build your greenhouse and how you ultimately fill it should be contingent on the kind of time and energy you have to put into your greenhouse. You can commit to your greenhouse on any level that you are comfortable with, but you should have a general idea of that level before you begin. You can always add more complexity if you have more time and energy to devote to your greenhouse, but if you take on too much before you’re ready, you will just end up with a neglected greenhouse.

Greenhouses can be a great outlet both personally and professionally for anyone who wants to get involved in them. Just sit down and answer a couple of basic questions before you begin and you will soon be on your way to having an amazing greenhouse that you will be proud of and other will envy. Doesn’t that sound like a lot of fun?

Making sure that your seeds are correctly planted

It seems like more and more people are beginning to show an avid interest in planting seeds in their gardens more than ever. The popularity of gardens is increasing all over the world as many people are seeking more ways to grow and cultivate their own food during this economic recession.

Planting seeds is actually not a difficult task to complete. The planting of the seeds all depends on where you plan to grow your specified plants at. For instance if you are planning on growing your plants in your home then you will need a container and potting soil in order to begin the growing process of your seeds.

However, if you are interested in planting seeds outside you will not need a lot of materials. All you will need in order to grow your seeds outside is a shovel to dig a hole to plant the seeds in as well as a decent amount of potting sole to add into the existing dirt to give the seeds an added level of nutrition so they can begin to grow at excessively fast rates.

If you are planning on planting seeds inside your home to later transfer over to the outside then you will need to gather a dish that is deep. The deeper the pan is the more soil you will be able to add into it which means your seeds will be able to pick up more nutrients from its surrounding soil.

You should loosen as well as dampen the potting mix before you place the seeds into the soil. Wet soil will allow the seeds to extract all of the nutrients that it needs from the soil in a quicker period of time. You should attempt to place the seeds as far down into the soil as you can get them.

Since the seeds will not be growing in an outside condition then it will be up to you to ensure that seeds are getting the correct amount of water that they need in order to sprout in the means that they should. Seeds should be scattered along the bottom of the container but they should keep a good distance away from each other.

The roots of the seeds in the growing pot will begin to grow together, so when you are planting seeds in a pot that is going to remain inside the house and later be transitioned to the outside you need to keep this fact in mind.

In order to extract the plant after the seeds have began to sprout you will need to cut off the container that you have started to plant them in to ensure that none of their roots get cut short. Cutting off the roots of a plant is cutting off their main source of eating.

Just think of cutting the roots off of a plant being along the same guidelines as cutting off a part of our mouths that we use to eat with. Without food we will not be able to grow, and without full use of our mouths we cannot eat. Without full use of their roots plants cannot eat.

Anyone who takes a great interest in gardening should be aware of how important healthy flower seeds are for growing nice plants. Taking flowers through all the evolution stages from seed to blossom requires a lot of care, not to mention that harmonious development highly depends on the pre-plantation stages. There are a few things you should check in order to get an idea over the flower seeds you intend to use. Many gardeners consider that nothing compares with the flower seeds that you spare and preserve yourself; yet, if you do so, it is a must that you take all the measures necessary to prevent mold formation or any degradation caused by excessive humidity or dryness.

First of all, only those flower seeds that are absolutely perfect from a “genetic” point of view should be preserved: how can you tell the difference? The best way is to use some magnifying lenses and have a close look at the seeds so as to be able to spot minor defects. Unhealthy flower seeds are not likely to give life to strong and beautiful plants, whereas seeds that have the proper consistency and size are the most looked for. You can consult some gardening books and learn some tricks about how to preserve flower seeds well.

There are advantages and disadvantages about the flower seeds you can purchase directly from special stores or simply order online. Here we mainly refer to how old the flower seeds are, and what sort of chemical treatments they may have been exposed to so as to prevent decay. Quality flower seeds should have the same color even when dry, and you can tell the age of a seed by merely analyzing its color. The less intense the color, the older the seed. However, in order to be able to do that at home, your eyes must be familiar with the look of a healthy dry seed.

Furthermore, don’t buy only the cheapest flower seeds you can find; you may save a few bucks, but you don’t have the same quality warranty as when purchasing the seeds from a trustworthy and famous company. Always check the label of the product to find out whether the flower seeds have been exposed to any form of chemical treatment or not; usually, manufacturers must inscribe the preservation process on the package, and without such information, the quality of the seeds is not reliable.

Question by chuck s: flower bulbs?
when would be a good time to take up flower bulbs,(gladiolas, peoines) and should they be stored over winter and replanted in the spring, i live in the south centeral usa?

Best answer:

Answer by itsnotarealname
How far south? Alabama and Georgia – you probably don’t have to remove them at all. Oddly enough, daffodils and tulips might need to be removed and put into the fridge to force them into dormancy for the spring – as the climate in the coastal areas isn’t cold enough.

If you’re further north, the best way to store any bulbs is to put them in untreated wood shavings. Mulch works. Put all that into a paper bag and store it in the bottom of the fridge, or in a cool dark corner of the basement.

I personally have two cats at my house and I have never had a problem with them trying to eat any of the leaves or flowers of the morning glory plant. Animals are pretty smart when it comes to which ones to eat and other ones which they shouldn’t. Cats and dogs just prefer to eat grass, so make sure that there isn’t any harmful pesticide on your lawn, as that will cause more harm to them than the morning glory plants will. Just plant them and enjoy.

At your house, if you are one of the fortunate ones to have a white picket fence surrounding it, then the one plant to put there, sprawling all over the fence, is the beautiful morning glory. Pergolas are also a structure, where they will climb and make a beautiful showing over your deck. A trellis is also a perfect place for this vine to grow up and twine itself all over, clinging to all parts of the trellis, making a wonderful showing.

You can buy the hybrid ones and they come in all different colors, pink, white, burgundy and different tones of blue.

The most popular is the large flowered blue one, which shows up so well against any structure, which you might want. The best way to start your morning glory seeds, is to soak them in water overnight, as the seed is very hard and soaking them will start them to open enough, to give them a good start when you plant them.

They like water, so even when you plant them, water them well and then sprinkle some water on them each morning through the whole season.

In a very short time, you will find that they will come through the soil and not long after that, they will be looking for somewhere to cling and wrap themselves around.

Their name is a bit of a give away as to when they bloom. First thing, as you wake up in the morning, they will be in bloom, especially if they are facing to the east, getting the morning sun.

They do prefer being in the sun, so plant them where they will get lots of it, and also plant them just outside your kitchen, so that when you wake up and are having your breakfast, they will start your day off beautifully, with their lovely colors. The flowers will not last very long, but tomorrow morning, there will be new ones blooming.

If you allow them to let the seeds fall where they have bloomed, you will be treated to them coming up the following year, without having to plant them again.

My personal preference is to plant a mixture of colors and size of blooms together, then you will be treated to all the different colors. You will be the envy of the neighborhood and people will be asking you, what kind of flower you have growing.

Simple Tips for a Garden Bursting with Color

A popular garden plant around the world, using annual poppy flower seeds to add life to a garden is easy to do. With a huge variety of species allowing for different colors, sizes and flower shapes to be incorporated into any garden, growing annual poppies is extremely rewarding. In addition, while many gardeners may prefer perennial specimens which return year after year, the ease in which poppies produce seeds means that ensuring a continuous supply is easy. And whether you want large blousy blooms, small delicate dwarf varieties, or elegant flowers that will make a statement, there is always a poppy to suit your needs.

Learning how to grow poppies is easy

While poppies will quite happily seed themselves around the garden creating surprising bursts of color where you may least expect it, sowing seeds is done best in peat pots. This careful management of seeds allows for gardeners to grow strong, healthy plants which can be placed where you want them, instead of where Mother Nature decides they should be. Learning how to grow poppies is easy, and done once gardeners will quickly wonder why they haven’t done it before. Fill pots with a seed compost not too rich in nutrients to avoid prolific leafy growth at the expense of flowers, and scatter seeds thinly across the surface. Cover with a thin layer of compost and water to ensure that the soil is moist. This is best done using a watering can with a fine sprinkling head attached, or a spray bottle to mist. The tiny size of annual poppy seeds will mean that any heavy watering will cause them to be displaced from where they’ve been sown. Alternatively stand the pot or tray in water and cover with a plastic bag, allowing the moisture to rise up through the compost.

Poppy flower seeds will start to germinate after 14 to 28 days

Seeds should be sown in spring, or for hardier annual varieties such as those included in the California poppy family, early to mid fall. These, providing that they are kept sheltered and frost free throughout the winter, will mature earlier than their spring sown counterparts, ensuring an early bout of flowering. After approximately 14 to 28 days depending on the variety, annual poppy flower seeds will start to germinate, sending up tiny spindling green shoots. At this time, when seedlings are large enough to nip with fingertips, it is important to ensure that numbers of thinned out to ensure that a few strong, healthy plants develop instead of large numbers of weedy plants which will ultimately not flower well.

Annual poppies in particular do well in poor soils

Keeping pots moist, young poppies will quickly grow and once they are several inches tall can be planted into their final positions whether it is a container or flower bed. Annual poppies in particular do well in poor soils, lending them to be suitable for areas of the garden which may be inhospitable to other plants. As flowering starts ensure that buds are removed as petals fall to keep plants producing blooms. Meanwhile, as the summer season starts to wane, let a few seed pods develop and ripen so that seeds can be collected and used for next years beautiful flowers.

Soon you will find it hard to remember a time without annual poppies

With such ease and simplicity, poppies are a welcome plant to all gardens. Reds, oranges, whites and pinks will brighten any outside oasis, provide splashes of color which are easy to keep and maintain. And with poppy flower seeds easy to collect and germinate, once a gardener includes poppies in their garden they will find it hard to remember a time without them.
